"The Real Anthony Fauci: An Introduction"

From Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s 2021 book:

“The Real Anthony Fauci”

(Adapted from the “Introduction”, by Gary L. Clendenon, 2023)

Editor's Note: I, Gary L. Clendenon, purchased Robert F. Kennedy, Jr's book "The Real Anthony Fauci" last year. As I usually do with new books, I read the "Introduction". After that, because it was SO well written, I figured I basically knew all I needed to know and that I wanted to share this information with others, so I set out typing it out so that you, also, can know this much--without reading the whole book.

INTRODUCTION

The first step is to give up the illusion that the primary purpose of modern medical research is to improve Americans’ health most effectively and efficiently. In our opinion, the primary purpose of commercially funded clinical research is to maximize financial return on investment, not health.”

- John Abramson, M.D., Harvard Medical School

I wrote this book to help Americans—and citizens across the globe—understand the historical underpinnings of the bewildering cataclysm that began in 2020. Liberal democracy effectively collapsed worldwide. The very governmental health regulators, social media eminences, and media companies that idealistic populations relied upon as champions of freedom, health, democracy, civil rights, and evidence-based public policy seemed to collectively pivot in a lockstep assault against free speech and personal freedoms.

Suddenly, those trusted institutions seemed to be acting in concert to generate fear, promote obedience, discourage critical thinking, and herd seven billion people to march to a single tune, culminating in mass public health experiments with a novel, shoddily tested and improperly licensed technology so risky that manufactures refused to produce it unless every government on Earth shielded them from liability.

Across Western nations, shell-shocked citizens experienced all the well-worn tactics of rising totalitarianism—mass propaganda and censorship, the orchestrated promotion of terror, the manipulation of science, the suppression of debate, the vilification of dissent, and use of force to prevent protest. Conscientious objectors who resisted these unwanted, experimental, zero-liability medical interventions faced orchestrated gaslighting, marginalization, and scapegoating.

American lives and livelihoods were shattered by a bewildering array of draconian diktats imposed without legislative approval or judicial review, risk assessment, or scientific citation. So-called Emergency Orders closed our businesses, schools and churches, made unprecedented intrusions into privacy, and disrupted our most treasured social and family relationships. Citizens the world over were ordered to stay in their homes.

Standing in the center of all the mayhem, with his confident hand on the helm, was one dominating figure. As the trusted public face of the United State government response to COVID, Dr. Anthony Fauci set this perilous course and sold the American public on a new destination for our democracy.

This book is the product of my own struggle to understand how the idealistic institutions our country built to safeguard both public health and democracy suddenly turned against our citizens and our values with such violence. I am a lifelong Democrat, whose family has had eighty years of deep engagement with America’s public health bureaucracy and long friendships with key federal regulators, including Anthony Fauci. Member of my family wrote many of the statutes under which these men govern, and defended that regulatory bulwark against ferocious attacks funded by industry. I built alliances with these individuals and their agencies during my years of environmental and public health advocacy. I watched them, often with admiration. But, I also watched how the industry, supposedly being regulated, used its indentured servants on Capitol Hill to systematically hollow out those agencies beginning in 1980, disabling their regulatory functions and transforming them, finally, into sock-puppets for the very industry Congress charged them with regulating.

My 40-year career as an environmental and public health advocate gave me a unique understanding of the corrupting mechanisms of “regulatory capture”, the process by which the regulator becomes beholden to the industry it’s meant to regulate. I spent four decades suing the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Among the hundreds of lawsuits I filed, perhaps a quarter were against regulatory officials making illegal concessions to Big Industries. I thought I knew everything about regulatory capture and that I had armored myself with an appropriate shield of cynicism.

But I was wrong about that. From the moment of my reluctant entrance into the vaccine debate in 2005, I was astonished to realize that the pervasive web of deep financial entanglements between Pharma and the government health agencies had put regulatory capture on steroids. The CDC, for example, owns 57 vaccine patents and spends $4.9 of its $12.0 billion-dollar annual budget (as of 2019) buying and distributing vaccines. NIH owns hundreds of vaccine patents and often profits from the sale of products it supposedly regulates. High level officials, including Dr. Fauci, receive yearly emoluments of up to $150,000 in royalty payments on products that they help develop and then usher through the approval process. The FDA receives 45 percent of its budget from the pharmaceutical industry, through what are euphemistically called “user fees.” When I learned that extraordinary fact, the disastrous health of the American people was no longer a mystery.

In this book, I track the rise of Anthony Fauci from his start as a young public health researcher and physician through his metamorphosis into the powerful technocrat who helped orchestrate and execute 2020’s historic coup d’etat against Western democracy. I explore the carefully planned militarization and monetization of medicine that has left American health ailing and its democracy shattered. I chronicle the troubling role of the dangerous concentrated mainstream media, Big Tech robber barons, the military and intelligence communities and their deep historical alliances with Big Pharma and public health agencies. The disturbing story that unfolds here has never been told, and many in power have worked hard to prevent the public from learning it. The main character is Dr. Anthony Fauci.

During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fauci occupied center stage in a global drama unprecedented in human history. Other nations looked to Dr. Fauci, America’s most powerful and enduring public health bureaucrat, to competently direct US health policies, and rapidly develop countermeasures that would serve as state-of-the-art templates for the rest of the world.

Dr. Anthony Fauci spent half a century as America’s reigning health commissar, ever preparing for his final role as Commander of history’s biggest war against a global pandemic. After beginning work in 1968 at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), he served as that agency’s Director since 1984. [Reminds me of a book title that might apply to this history!] His $417,608 salary makes him the highest paid of all four million federal employees, including the President. His experiences surviving 50 years of a key federal bureaucracy, having advised six Presidents and their Administrations, seasoned him exquisitely for a crisis that would allow him to wield power enjoyed by few rulers and no doctor in history.

During the epidemic’s early months, Dr. Fauci’s calm, authoritative manner was Prozac for Americans besieged by two existential crises: the Trump Presidency, and COVID-19. Democrats and idealistic liberals around the globe took heart from Dr. Fauci’s serene, solid presence on the White House stage—initially cutting a heroic figure. Turning their backs to the foreboding horizon, trusting Americans manned the oars and blindly obeyed his commands—little realizing they were propelling our country toward the desolate destination where democracy goes to die.

Throughout the first year of the crisis, Dr. Fauci’s personal charisma and authoritative voice inspired confidence in his prescriptions and won him substantial affection. The New Yorker dubbed him “America’s Doctor”. Dr. Fauci encouraged his own canonization and the disturbing inquisition against his blasphemous critics. In a June 9, 2021 interview, he pronounced that Americans who questioned his statements were, per se, anti-science. “Attacks on me,” he explained, “quite frankly, are attacks on science.” The sentiment he expressed reminds us that blind faith in authority is a function of religion, not science. Science, like democracy, flourishes on skepticism toward official orthodoxies. Dr. Fauci’s schoolboy scorn for citation and his acknowledgment to the New York Times that he had twice lied to Americans to promote his agendas—on masks and herd immunity—raised the prospect that some of his other “scientific” assertions were, likewise, noble lies to a credulous public he believes is unworthy of self-determinism.

In August, 2021, Dr. Fauci’s acolyte—CNN’s television doctor, Peter Hotez—published an article in a scientific journal calling for legislation to “expand federal hate crime protections” to make criticism of Dr. Fauci a felony. In declaring that he had no conflicts, Dr. Hotez, who says that vaccine skeptics should be snuffed out, evidently forgot the millions of dollars in grants he has taken from Dr. Fauci’s NIAID since 1993, and more than $15 million from Dr. Fauci’s partner, Bill Gates. Dr. Fauci’s direct and indirect control—through NIH, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Welcome Trust of some 57 percent of global biomedical research funding—guarantees him this sort of homage from leading medical researchers, allows him to craft and perpetuate the reigning global medical narratives, and can fortify the canon that he, himself, is science incarnate.

High visibility henchmen, like Hotez—and Pharma’s financial control over the media through advertising dollars—have made Dr. Fauci’s pronouncements impervious to debate and endowed the NIAID Director with personal virtues and medical gravitas supported by neither science nor his public health record. By the latter metric, his 50-year regime has been calamitous for public health and for democracy. His administration of the COVID pandemic was, likewise, a disaster.

Tony Fauci dictated a series of policies that resulted in by far the most deaths, and one of the highest percentage COVID-19 body counts of any nation on the planet. Only relentless propaganda and wall-to-wall censorship could conceal his disastrous mismanagement during COVID-19’s first year. The US, with 4 percent of the world’s population, suffered 14.5 percent of total COVID deaths with a mortality rate of 2,107 per million compared to 139 per million in Japan.

After achieving these cataclysmically awful results, “Teflon Tony’s” media savvy and his skills for deft maneuvering beguiled incoming President Joe Biden into appointing him as the new administration’s COVID Response Director.

Americans failed to see the mounting evidence that Dr. Fauci’s strategies were consistently failing to achieve promised results, as he doggedly elevated Pharma profits and bureaucratic powers over waning public health.

As we shall see from this 50-year saga, Dr. Fauci’s remedies are often more lethal than the diseases they pretend to treat. His COVID prescriptions were no exception. His unprecedented quarantine of the healthy would kill far more people than COVID, obliterate the global economy, plunge millions into poverty and bankruptcy, and grievously wound constitutional democracy globally. We have no way of knowing how many people died from isolation, unemployment, deferred medical care, depression, mental illness, obesity, stress, overdoses, suicide, addiction, alcoholism, and the accidents that so often accompany despair.

We cannot dismiss the accusations that Fauci’s lockdowns proved more deadly than the contagion. A June 24, 2021 BMJ study showed that US life expectancy decreased by 1.9 years during the quarantine. The virus could not by itself cause the astonishing decline. Hispanic and Black Americans often shoulder the heaviest burden of Dr. Fauci’s public health adventures. Between 2018 and 2020, the average Hispanic American lost around 3.9 years in longevity, while the average lifespan of a Black American dropped by 3.25 years. This 1.9 year national average was roughly 8.5 times the average decrease in 16 comparable countries—making this dramatic culling unique to America. Steven Woolf, Director Emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University, said, “We haven’t had a decrease of that magnitude since World War II.”

As Dr. Fauci’s policies took hold globally, 300 million humans fell into dire poverty, food insecurity, and starvation. During 2020, 10,000 children died each month due to virus-linked hunger from global lockdowns. In addition, 500,000 children per month experienced wasting and stunting from malnutrition, which can permanently damage children. In 2020, disruptions to health and nutrition services killed 228,000 children in South Asia. Deferred medical treatments for cancers, kidney failure, and diabetes killed hundreds of thousands of people and created epidemics of cardiovascular disease and undiagnosed cancer. Unemployment shock is expected to cause 890,000 additional deaths over the next 15 years.

The lockdown disintegrated vital food chains, dramatically increased rates of child abuse, as well as debilitating developmental delays, and severe educational deficits in young children. According to one study, suicide rates among children rose 50%. A study by Brown University found that infants born during the quarantine were short, on average, 22 IQ points. Some 93,000 Americans died of overdoses in 2020—a 30% increase over 2019. Millions of hospital and nursing home patients died alone without comfort or a final goodbye from their families. Dr. Fauci admitted that he never assessed the costs of desolation, poverty, unhealthy isolation, and depression fostered by his countermeasures. He explained, “I don’t give advice about anything other than public health”—even though he was so clearly among those responsible for the economic and social costs.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fauci served as the ringmaster in the engineered demolition of America’s economy, putting 58 million Americans out of work, and permanently bankrupting small businesses, including 41 percent of black-owned businesses, some of which took generations to build.

Dr. Fauci’s business closures pulverized America’s middle class and engineered the largest upward transfer of wealth in human history. In 2020, workers lost 3.7 trillion while billionaires gained 3.9 trillion. Some 493 individuals became new billionaires, and an additional 8 million Americans dropped below the poverty line. The biggest winners were the robber barons—the very companies that were cheering Dr. Fauci’s lockdown and criticizing his critics: Big Tech, Big Data, Big Telecom, Big Finance, Big Media, and Silicon Valley Internet Titans.

The very internet companies that snookered us all with the promise of democratizing communications made it impermissible for Americans to criticize their government or question the safety of pharmaceutical products; these companies propped up all official pronouncements while scrubbing all dissent. The same Tech/Data and Telecom robber barons rapidly transformed America’s once-proud democracy into a censorship and surveillance police state from which they profit at every turn.

Larry Ellison, Bill Gates, and the other members of this government/industry collaboration used the lockdown to accelerate construction of their 5G network of satellites, antennae, biometric facial recognition, and “track and trace” infrastructure that they, and their government and intelligence agency partners, can use to mine and monetize our data, further suppress dissent, to compel obedience to arbitrary dictates, and to manage the rage that comes as Americans finally wake up to the fact that this outlaw gang has stolen our democracy, our civil rights, our country, and our way of life—while we huddled in orchestrated fear from a flu-like virus.

The dramatic and steady erosion of constitutional rights and fomenting of a global coup d'état against democracy, the demolition of our economy, the obliteration of a million small businesses, the collapsing of the middle class, the evisceration of our Bill of Rights, the tidal wave of surveillance capitalism and the rising bio-security state, seemed, to a dazed and uncritical America, like it might be reasonable price to pay for safety. And anyway, we were told, it’s just for 15 days, or maybe 15 months, or however long it takes for Dr. Fauci to “follow the data” to his answer.

Dr. Fauci’s catastrophic failure during the COVID-19 crisis is consistent with the disastrous declines in public health during his half-century running NIAID, including an exploding chronic disease epidemic that has made the “Fauci generation”—children born after his elevation to NIAID king in 1984—the sickest generation in American history. His subservience to the Big Ag, Big Food, and Big Pharma has left our children drowning in a toxic soup of pesticide residues, corn syrup, and processed foods, while serving as pincushions for 69 mandated vaccines doses by age 18—none of them properly safety tested.

By any measure Dr. Fauci has consistently failed upward. When Dr. Fauci took office, America was still ranked among the world’s healthiest populations. Following WWII, life expectancy in the US climbed for five decades, but as Tony Fauci spent the 1990s expanding the pharmaceutical and chemical paradigm—instead of public health—the pace of both longevity and intelligence slowed. An August, 2021 study by the Commonwealth Fund ranked America’s health care system dead last among industrialized nations, with the highest infant mortality and lowest life expectancy.

Under Dr. Fauci’s leadership, the allergic, autoimmune, and chronic illnesses which Congress specifically charged NIAID to investigate and prevent, have mushroomed to afflict 54 percent of children, up from 12.8 percent when he took over in 1984. Dr. Fauci has offered no explanations as to why allergic diseases like asthma, eczema, food allergies, allergic rhinitis, and anaphylaxis suddenly exploded in 1989, five years after he came to power. On its website, NIAID boasts that autoimmune disease is one of the agency’s top priorities. [Yet] some 80 autoimmune diseases, including juvenile diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, Grave’s disease, and Crohn’s disease, which were practically unknown prior to 1984, suddenly became epidemic under his watch. Autism exploded from 3/10,000 Americans when Fauci joined NIAID, to one in thirty-four today. Neurological diseases have become commonplace in American children. By this decade’s end, obesity, diabetes, and pre-diabetes are on track to debilitate 85% of American citizens. America is among the ten most overweight countries on Earth. The health impacts of these epidemics eclipse even the most exaggerated health impacts of COVID-19.

What is causing this cataclysm? Since genes don’t cause epidemics, it must be environmental toxins. Many of these illnesses became epidemic in the late 1980s, after vaccine manufacturers were granted government protection from liability, and consequently accelerated their introduction of new vaccines. The manufacturer’s inserts of the 69 vaccine doses list each of the now-common illnesses—some 170 in total—as vaccine side effects. So vaccines are a potential culprit, but not the only one. Other possible perpetrators are corn syrup, flame retardants, processed foods, cell phone and EMF radiation, chlorpyrifos, ultrasound, and neonicotinoid pesticides. Tracing the etiology of these diseases is exactly what Congress charged Dr. Fauci to perform. But Tony Fauci has shown little interest in funding basic science to answer those questions.

Is this because any serious investigation into the sources of the chronic disease epidemic would certainly implicate the powerful pharmaceutical companies and the chemical, agricultural, and processed food multinationals that Dr. Fauci and his twenty-year business partner, Bill Gates, have devoted their careers to promoting? As we shall see, his capacity to curry favor with these merchants of pills, powders, potions, poisons, pesticides, pollutants, and pricks has been the key to Dr. Fauci’s longevity at HHS.

Is it fair to blame Dr. Fauci? Tony Fauci has more power than any other individual in America to direct public energies toward solutions. He has done the opposite. Instead, Dr. Fauci has deliberately and systematically used his staggering power to derail inquiry and obstruct research that might provide answers.

As an advocate for public health, robust science, and independent regulatory agencies, I [Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.] have battled Dr. Fauci for years. I know him personally, and my impression of him is very different from my fellow Democrats. Dr. Fauci played a historic role as the leading architect of “agency capture”—the corporate seizure of America’s public health agencies by the pharmaceutical industry.

Lamentably, Dr. Fauci’s failure to achieve public health goals during the COVID pandemic are not anomalous errors, but consistent with a recurrent pattern of sacrificing public health and safety on the altar of pharmaceutical profits and self-interests. He consistently prioritized pharmaceutical industry profits over public health. Dr. Fauci has, throughout his long career, routinely falsified science, deceived the public and physicians, and lied about safety and efficacy. Dr. Fauci’s malefactions detailed in this volume include his own crimes against the hundreds of Black and Hispanic orphan and foster children whom he subjected to cruel and deadly medical experiments and his role, with Bill Gates, in transforming hundreds of thousands of Africans into lab rats for low-cost clinical trials of dangerous experimental drugs. Dr. Fauci and Mr. Gates have turned the African continent into a dumping ground for expired, dangerous, and ineffective drugs, many of them discontinued for safety reasons in the US and Europe.

[In this book] you will read how Dr. Fauci’s fascination with, and generous investments in, so called “gain of function” experiments to engineer pandemic superbugs, give rise to the ironic possibility that Dr. Fauci may have played a role in triggering the global contagion that two US presidents entrusted him to manage. You will also read about his two-decade strategy of promoting false pandemics as a scheme for promoting novel vaccines, drugs, and Pharma profits. You will learn of his actions to conceal widespread contamination in blood and vaccines, his destructive vendettas against scientists who challenge the Pharma paradigm, his deliberate sabotaging of patent-expired remedies against infectious diseases, from HIV to COVID-19, to grease the skids for less effective, but more profitable remedies. You will learn of the grotesque body counts that have accumulated in the wake of his cold-blooded focus on industry profits over public health. All his strategies during COVID—falsifying science to bring dangerous and ineffective drugs to market, suppressing and sabotaging competitive products that have lower profit margins even if the cost is prolonging pandemics and losing thousands of lives—all of these share a common purpose: the myopic devotion to Pharma. Tony Fauci does not do public health; he is a businessman, who has used his office to enrich his pharmaceutical partners and expand the reach of influence that has made him the most powerful—and despotic—doctor in human history.

I wrote this book so that Americans can understand Dr. Fauci’s pernicious role in allowing pharmaceutical companies to dominate our government and subvert our democracy, and to chronicle the key role Dr. Fauci has played in the current coup d'état against democracy.

“GOD and Slavery!” (Grace Note #98)

GOD and Slavery!”

Grace Note #98

By Gary L. Clendenon, May 9, 2021

All Bible passages from The Message Bible, unless otherwise stated

We are living in the 21
st Century and yet almost daily hear we about the issue of race and racism in the news. How did we get here? The United States claims to be a Christian nation, founded on “Judeo-Christian” beliefs and principles. That’s a fancy way of saying we get our foundational beliefs from the Bible. Given that, how did our founders understand that racism—the mindset that led to slavery—was okay? Did they misunderstand the Bible, or were they not following its teachings? Is GOD “Pro-slavery”, or even worse, a “Racist”?

There are racists who miss-use the Bible to support their beliefs, thus making God and themselves racist. I’m sure I join you in believing they are completely wrong and un-Biblical in their beliefs. However, these people do show us a glimpse into the answer of how we got here. It is possible for human beings—even “God Followers”—to be completely sincere and have hugely wrong beliefs. As you no doubt know, the history of the world and our country are full of examples of this and the results that follow.

From my perspective as a Bible-believing Christian who has studied the Bible all my life, it is impossible to legitimately argue that GOD is in any way a racist. Therefore, those who would argue that can only be arguing from a place of misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Knowing what we know about GOD, how could anyone say that some humans—who all descended from the same Adam and Eve that GOD created and loved—are better in GOD’s eyes than other humans based on their skin color or where they live?

We must all be loved equally or not at all. “For GOD so LOVED THE WORLD that he gave his one and only Son, that WHOEVER believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV, emphasis mine) “Whoever” means there are no race or color or geographic requirements or limitations. Paul, in Galatians 3:28-29, reinforces this anti-racist message this way: “In Christ’s family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ.” So, no, GOD is NOT a “Racist”!

So, is GOD “Pro-slavery”? Short answer: “No”. Less short answer: “No, because GOD’s ideal for humanity—as stated above—is that all humans would be equal and treat each other equally.” Obviously, that didn’t happen after sin came into the world. Humans in their selfishness struggled and fought for control, dominance, and power over others. Given this sad result of sin, how would GOD respond? That is the “Longer answer” we will now explore.

To understand the “Longer answer”, we need to pull back all the way to the “Big picture” of who GOD is and how GOD relates to broken humans. What I’m going to share next comes from two of the main bedrock principles found in the Bible. 1: “God is Love.” (I John 4:8) and 2: Because GOD is Love, “GOD meets people where they are at” and attempts to grow them up into mature humans. (I Cor. 3:1-3/13:11/(1))

Let’s look at how these principles applied to the Israelites: when GOD rescued the Hebrews out from hundreds of years of slavery in Egypt, the Israelites had long since forgotten the glory days of their ancestors Joseph and Abraham. For many, those old stories of a God who blessed and interacted with His people had almost become “Fairy tales”. The Children of Israel had for the most part, as usually happens, become culturally adapted to the cruel and violent world they lived and grew up in. Given this adaptation, how then could GOD best meet these people where they were at?

Old Testament scholar, Alden Thompson, in his book Who’s Afraid of the Old Testament God, answers that question this way:

The Old Testament people were often violent; God had to meet them there and help them from there. ...when this rough lot of ex-slaves arrived at Sinai, the laws which God gave them through Moses provide clear evidence that these people...were so deeply involved with cruel customs that instant abolition of such customs was out of the question. The best that could be done in some instances was a slight ‘humanizing’ of some of the more barbaric aspects. … God took this people, in spite of the many barbaric and cruel customs which they had adopted, and began to draw them to him. He wished to show them a better way. But if human beings are to be treated as real human beings who possess the power of choice, then the ‘better way’ must come gradually.” (pg. 24-25, 63.)

GOD met the Hebrews where they were at, and through “Baby steps” attempted to pull them in the direction He desired them to go.

Philip Yancey, in his book The Bible Jesus Read, compares our harsh judgment of GOD’s laws to the view of other nation’s laws at the time of the Israelites in the following quote:

The Hebrews lived in wild, barbaric times. Their laws, which may seem harsh to us, represent a great softening compared to their neighbors’ laws. They established basic rules of warfare and enshrined in their laws respect for the poor and care for the environment. They set limits on revenge and built Cities of Refuge. We must remember, as we look back on a time of blood vengeance, slavery, polygamy...that God had to work with people’s moral condition at a certain stage. … For a time, he [God] allowed behavior that he disapproved of, ‘because your hearts were hard’.” (Preface, p. 12-13.) (2)

Thomas Cahill, in his book The Gift of the Jews, elaborates on this important theme of a kinder, gentler law:

...this long-winded, unwieldy compilation of assorted prescriptions represents an overall softening—a humanizing—of the common law of the ancient Middle East…. The casual cruelty of other ancient law codes...is seldom matched in the Torah. Rather, in the prescriptions of Jewish law we cannot but note a presumption that all people, even slaves, are human and that all human lives are sacred. The content bias [of the laws of Torah] is in favor not of the powerful and their possessions but of the powerless and their poverty; and there is even a frequent enjoinder to sympathy: ‘A sojourner [foreigner] you are not to oppress: you yourselves know well the feelings of the sojourner [foreigner], for sojourners [foreigners] you were in the land of Egypt.’ This bias toward the underdog was unique not only in ancient law but in the whole history of the law.” (pg. 154-55, emphasis mine)

The other day I was studying the laws given to Moses that immediately follow the “10 Commandments”. Out of all the laws given to Moses—and there were many—the very first laws are about slavery! Exodus 21 commands that if a Hebrew is made a slave, then after serving 6 years, that slave must be released. If that slave enjoys working for the owner, then that slave has the option to choose to become a permanent slave. (Obviously, the slave would have to be treated very well over those 6 years to choose to become a permanent slave!) If a slave owner were to cause permanent harm to a slave, the law stated that slave must be freed—again causing the owner to be careful of how he treated his slaves! (Exodus 21:2-6)

It gets even better! In Deuteronomy 15:12-15,18 after repeating the command to set a slave free after six years of service, it goes on to say: “...don’t send them away empty-handed. Provide them with some animals, plenty of bread and wine and oil. Load them with provisions…. Don’t consider this an unreasonable hardship...after all, they have worked for you for six years at ½ of the cost of a hired hand. Don’t for a minute forget that you were once slaves in Egypt and GOD, your God, redeemed you from that slave world.”

There were also different laws for female slaves, as the intent was for the female slave to become a wife of the slave owner’s son, and then be treated as a daughter of the new family. If that didn’t happen, her family could buy her back. If the slave woman did become a wife and her husband married a new woman, the husband was required to provide for ALL her needs. If that didn’t happen, she was free to leave him, without penalty or cost. (Exodus 21:8-11)

It must also be remembered that as a part of the 4th of the 10 Commandments, all slaves were not to work on the Sabbath day—a reminder that all humans were created of GOD and equally valued in His eyes.

It is clear from these Bible laws regarding slavery that the intent of them was to value and honor slaves as human beings who were important to take care of well. As I read and pondered these laws, it brought to mind a question: “What would have happened if early Americans had followed these Biblical laws?” The logical answer surprised me. I believe that our early United States History would be completely different if slave owners had followed the Biblical laws regarding slavery! The misuse and abuse of slaves is clearly the saddest part of U.S. History and the many, many lives—deaths—it took to get to a healthier place regarding this topic could have all been avoided if only they had followed the Bible’s teachings on slavery. How sad and unfortunate!

It seems that these early Biblical ideas of treating slaves well, knowingly or unknowingly I’m not sure, may have have had some influence in the ancient world as it later developed. In an article entitled “The History of Slavery”, it says The practice of human slavery grew as the world became more civilized and organized cities and farms were developed. According to historical texts, the lives of slaves in ancient times were typically better than that of peasants in the same era, as they had regular care, food, shelter and clothing. Slaves rarely attempted to run away unless their masters were atypically cruel.” (3, emphasis mine)

Moving on into the New Testament Bible, since, as has been shown, by the time of Jesus and the Roman Empire, slavery was completely common and normal, naturally, in “meeting people where they where at”, Jesus’ parables and stories often included slaves in them. These inclusions confirm the normalcy of slavery in that society. Jesus said nothing against such slavery. Apparently, it wasn’t time.

The Apostle Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament had some things to say about slaves and slavery. Recently Ty Gibson preached a sermon on Ephesians 6:5-9 (4) which included the famous Pauline instruction for slaves to obey their masters and for masters to treat their slaves well.

Gibson said that according to John Stotts, there were approximately 60 million slaves in the ancient Roman Empire. At that time, slaves had no human rights and their owners could treat them however they wished—and they did.

Paul’s words to treat one’s slaves well, were, according to Gibson, at the time they were written, “revolutionary”—re-framing “misuse and abuse of power” to “using one’s power to nurture and create well-being”. Paul’s words were revolutionary in the way they equalized the power dynamics of that age. From his position in History, Paul is scandalously ruling out all abuse of power towards underlings.

Gibson concludes: “This text was not an affirmation of slavery, but the Biblical beginning of the end of slavery.” Paul is setting up the time when the mindset of human equality would not allow for the enslavement of others. Unfortunately, as we know now, that took a long time to come about.

What happened to slavery, and specifically, black racism after Bible times? I found that David M. Goldenberg, after researching this topic for 13 years, concluded that in biblical and post-biblical Judaism there were no anti-black or racist sentiments. He says that the notion of black inferiority developed later, as blacks were enslaved across cultures. His findings dovetail with those of other scholars who have not found anti-black sentiment in ancient Greece, Rome, or Arabia. (5)

So, research tells us that it wasn’t until the 18th and 19th centuries that “Genesis 9:18-27 became the curse of Ham, a foundation for myth for collective degradation, conventionally trotted out as God’s reason for condemning generations of dark-skinned peoples from Africa to slavery.” (5) Turns out American and European slavery were, at best, based on a hugely unfortunate misunderstanding of the “Curse of Ham” by Noah, or, at worst, an intentional, convenient misuse of the Genesis text. Even, at best, though, the clear Biblical commands to treat slaves well—as full human beings—were completely ignored.

There is a factor regarding this topic that we have not talked about. As Paul says in Ephesians 6:12, “...we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked forces in the heavenly world...the cosmic powers of this dark age.” To be more specific, Peter says quite clearly: “Be alert, on watch! Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8)

As I stated in the beginning of this article, GOD is Love. Because that is true, when we ask the question “Who or what does racism and slavery serve?” clearly the answer is NOT “Love”. It is equally as clear, if you think about it, that racism and slavery could not serve Satan’s Kingdom more!

It is the Devil’s desire to completely destroy the Image of GOD in humans, and racism and slavery are a hugely successful method for reaching that goal. Sadly, as we have seen, Christians are not immune from being deceived by “The Father of Lies”. But, this lie has been exposed and cannot any longer stand. Racism and Slavery are Evil, and children of Satan himself.

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” ~ Romans 12:21 (NLT) End of Story.

FOOTNOTES:

1. For those of you who are Seventh-day Adventists, Ellen G. White states this principle often, but best in Selected Messages, Book One, p. 22: “The Lord speaks to human beings in imperfect speech, in order that the degenerate senses, the dull, earthly perception, of earthly beings may comprehend His words. Thus is shown God’s condescension. He meets fallen human beings where they are.(emphasis mine)

2. Yancey is quoting Jesus from Mathew 19 where he says: “Moses provided for divorce as a concession to your hard heartedness, but it is not part of God’s original plan.” This is more evidence for “God meeting people where they are at.” Jesus was citing that it is the hardness (or softness) of human hearts that causes GOD to make adjustments in how He interacts with us and instructs us to interact with others.

“The Incurable Longing” (A Universal Story from The People's Republic of China)

“The Incurable Longing” (A Universal Story from The People's Republic of China)

An excerpt from Chapter 5: “The East China Sea” from Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven by Susan Jane Gilman, pgs. 91-93

Note: The following is a true story that took place in 1986 in The People's Republic of China, just after it opened up to the rest of the World! (Doubly meaningful to me as I taught English in the PRC 1986-87.)

...standing alone by the railing on the outer deck of the ferry, … I could hear hear the swishing against the hull, the leviathan throbs of the engines. … I had no idea where I was heading. None of the maps had Dinghai on them.

I felt a shiver of ecstatic terror. Except for [my other passengers] not a single person in the entire world knew that I was on board a ferry right now, plowing through the darkness in the East China Sea. … I stared at the black water forlornly. In the end, I realized, this was all there ever really was. … The true condition of anyone once you stripped them of their loved ones, their culture, and their passions was just this: Loneliness. An incurable longing. Insecurity. And grief.

Suddenly I started to cry. I felt foolish, but then, who would hear me? Who would even care? I leaned against the railing, feeling pitiful and forsaken. I pulled out a Kleenex and blew my nose unglamorously.

In the distance, a man begins singing. It took a minute for it to register. At first I was certain I was imagining it.

But from across the deck came the thin, fragile, unmistakable words:

Country roads, take me home,

To the place, I belong

West Virginia, Mountain Mama

… A few yards to my left, a slim young Chinese man in a white button-down shirt and Mao pants was pressed up against the railing. His head was thrown back, his eyes closed, his small, tapered hands pressed to his heart.

Take me home, country roads

“Country Roads” had been on of the preeminent songs of my childhood. My whole family sang it in the car when we drove up to Silver Lake—where we went to flee the heat every summer. … It was the song of uncomplicated happiness, of a time when my family was at its best. … It was the song from when I was six years old and felt loved and serene, when I never felt a yearning to be anywhere else. Now, halfway around the world, a young Chinese man just happened to be singing it beside me in the darkness aboard a ferry bound for a hidden recess of the People's Republic of China.

I hear her voice,

in the morning hour she calls me

The radio reminds me of my home far away

He seemed strangely unfazed when I drew up beside him and began singing along. We sang as if it were the most natural duet in the world, as if it had been pre-ordained, the two of us harmonizing without even glancing at each other, just gazing straight ahead at the sea in tandem.

When we finished the last verse, however, we turned and shook each other's hand. … “Oh my God. Do you know what that song means to me? I spent my whole childhood singing it.”

The young man smiled at me glassily. I realized that he had no idea what I was saying. He didn't speak a word of English.

How...had he learned an American folk song? This was 1986. People were still listening to record albums on turntables. … There was no independent television in China, no pop radio, now Western movies, and in some places, no electricity. And yet—John Denver?

Gesturing, I managed to persuade the young man to come with me to find Gunter [my amateur translator].

“Gunter, this man was singing a song from my childhood. Please, “ I begged when we found him. “Ask him how he learned it.”

Gunter translated. The young man's name was Wen. “Wen is saying that he has learned this song a long time ago from his English instructor. But he is saying that his instructor only teaches him the song phonetically. He says he does not know the meaning of the words. He is asking you to explain them, please.”

I had Gunter tell Wen that “Country Roads” is about a man who is far from his mountain home in West Virginia. Everywhere he goes, he misses it and hears its beauty calling to him. He yearns for the country roads to carry him back there.

… Wen looked at both of us sadly. [Then Gunter translated his response.] “He is saying he is understanding the song very well. He is saying in China, many people are being made to work very far away from their homes. He is saying that many people in the world are missing this West Virginia.”

The three of us were quiet for a moment. Some things need no translation at all.

"GOD is My Manager" (The 23rd Psalm)

The 23rd Psalm

GC Version © 2006 by Gary L. Clendenon

Inspired by the book A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by Phillip Keller

I am proud to say that GOD is my manager,

And I am completely satisfied with His management of my life.

My manager’s constant care frees me to focus on resting in quiet contentment.

In the morning, my manager gives me purpose and direction. He leads me through a

perfect daily schedule—His timing never failing to meet my needs.

When I stray from my manager’s guidance and end up flat on my back—arms and legs

flailing, He finds me, frees me, and then holds me ‘til I’m back on my feet again.

Knowing my tendency to get stuck in unproductive ruts, my manager leads me on the

right path for me. As I follow, I learn that His reputation as “Best Manager” is well

deserved.

Yes, even when led through the deepest, darkest, most difficult days, I know no fear. For

You—Knower of the Best Way—are with me.

Your weapon—the power and authority of your word—protects me, disciplines me, and l

ays bare the secrets of my soul; while, at the same time, your gentle Spirit reassures me

with the constant comfort of your presence.

You go before me and beat back my enemies as you prepare for me the best place. I

flourish there in the confidence that you’ve got me covered!

You continuously anoint my mind with your Spirit, freeing me from the distracting buzz

of life’s ever-present and annoying irritations. I am overwhelmed with gratitude!

I am sure that whatever happens in my life will, thanks to my manager’s mercy, turn

out…good.

I plan to stay with my manager for the rest of my life!
